A confirming bank may add its own payment undertaking when the beneficiary wants additional protection against issuing-bank or country risk.

Letters of credit provide strong documentary payment assurance but involve bank fees, administrative work, strict documentary requirements, and the risk of discrepancies. IInternational transactions commonly incorporate ICC rules such as UCP 600, which apply when a documentary credit expressly states that it is subject to them.
